The Choteau High School varsity football team notched their first win of the season, 76-48, over the Rocky Boy Northern Stars on Sept. 24 during Homecoming last week.
This week, Choteau will be on the road, playing Fort Benton at 7 p.m. on Oct. 1. The Choteau boys are now 1-4 overall and 1-2 in conference. The final game of the regular season will be Oct. 8 at home against Chinook, unless Choteau is able to make up a game against Great Falls Central Catholic that was cancelled because of COVID-19 concerns on the Great Falls team.
In last week’s offensive battle, Choteau amassed 503 yards offense, including 440 rushing and 63 passing. Coach Lucas Gunderson used both Garrett Torok and Bowen Rappold as quarterbacks in the game. Torok completed two passes for 63 yards and one touchdown, passing 65 yards to Derek Brownell and minus-two yards to Jacob Beattie. Beattie scored on a 22-yard pass interception return.
The Choteau boys mostly moved the ball on the ground. Jeffery Colesworthy had 15 carries for 274 yards and five touchdowns. Carter Morgan had 13 carries for 121 yards and four touchdowns, including a 75-yard kickoff return.
Torok had two carries for minus four yards and Rappold had two carries for six yards. Late in the fourth quarter, when Gunderson put his subs in, Nathan Gunderson had four carries for 14 yards and Justyce Yeager had three carries for 29 yards.
In the first quarter, Rocky Boy kicked to Choteau, and on Choteau’s second play, the Bulldogs fumbled the ball on their own six-yard line and Rocky Boy recovered and ran the fumble in for a touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion to lead, 8-0.
Choteau then went on to score four times to lead, 26-16, after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Bulldogs put up another 30 points on four more touchdowns, largely powered by Colesworthy and Morgan as running backs. Each scored two touchdowns, and the Bulldogs were up, 56-32, at halftime.
In the third quarter, Choteau scored twice, on runs by Morgan and Colesworthy, and Rocky Boy scored once on a 20-yard pass. While Choteau kept the ball on the ground, Rocky Boy quarterback Kellen Colliflower went to the air as the Stars scored all five of their touchdowns on pass plays with Joe Demontiney, their senior wide receiver, the recipient of many of those passes.
Choteau led, 70-40, going into the fourth quarter, and Morgan added the team’s final points with a 65-yard kick-off return to go up, 76-40. With about seven minutes left in the game, Coach Gunderson put in the subs. Rocky Boy scored one more time on a 35-yard pass with a two-point conversion, and the Bulldogs won, 76-48.
Choteau saw good blocking by the offensive line and the defensive line did a great job of shutting down Rocky Boy running backs Ben Crebs, Isiah Limberhand and Christian Gonzalez, forcing Colliflower to pass. Choteau saw aggressive tackling by Ben Selander, Morgan, Colesworthy, Brownell and others.
The Bulldogs had five penalties in the game, two personal fouls at 15 yards each, a pass interference at 15 yards, a penalty against the bench at 15 yards and a 10-yard holding penalty, for a total of 70 yards.
The Stars had six penalties tallying 70 yards.
