The Choteau High School boys basketball team opened the season with a loss on the road to Jefferson County High School in Boulder, but players are practicing hard this week as they prepare for conference games against Shelby on Jan. 8 on the road and at home against Cut Bank on Jan. 9.

The Choteau junior varsity team will play in Shelby at 4:30 p.m., followed by varsity at 6 p.m. At home against Cut Bank, the JV team will play at 1 p.m. and the varsity team at 4 p.m.

CHS is still playing stacked boys and girls basketball games this season, but the rotation has changed from last year so that the boys teams play first, followed by the girls teams with the later times.

Because of COVID-19, the attendance at home sporting events is being limited to just a few fans per player. Fans can call the CHS office at 466-5303 for more information on attending or plan to watch the games online on the National Federation of High Schools network (

In their season opener, the Choteau Bulldogs fell behind, 24-14, in the first quarter and were never able to match Jefferson’s offensive production. With the COVID-19 pandemic continuing and vaccinations for those age 16 to 64 in good health not scheduled until late spring at the earliest, the schedules for high school sporting events are subject to change every week. Next week, the CHS boys are scheduled to be on the road, playing Rocky Boy on Jan. 15 and Fairfield on Jan. 16 with both of these being District 1B conference games.

The following week, Choteau will be home on Jan. 22 against Great Falls Central Catholic and home against Broadwater County High School from Townsend on Jan. 23.

Choteau’s varsity and junior varsity teams are under new leadership this season with Kevin Kovatch as the head coach and Robert Dye as the assistant coach. The team took 11 boys to Jefferson: Bowen Rappold, Dillon Harrell, Henry Bieler, Jacob Brewster, Sterling Stott, Jacob Beattie, Tony Daley, Rocky Allaire, Tommy James, Landon Jamison and Anthony Carlon.
