What better way to celebrate Independence Day than to play America’s pastime? The Tri-County Cardinals Legion baseball team was at home in Conrad to take on the Malta Royals in a doubleheader on July 2.
The boys had a great day as they were able to compile two beatdowns. The pitchers were on fire and the bats were even hotter as the Cards rolled to victories of 10-0 and 11-1.
BenLehnerz was on his game as he tossed a complete game shutout in game one. He gave up only four hits and matched it with four strikeouts. Carson Bitney and Spencer Lehnerz both had two hot games while Kyler Crabtree, Kolby Kovatch and Bitney also had two runs batted in. By the end of the third inning, the Cardinals were up 8-0 and had the game in the bag before tacking on two more runs.
Game two was a similar story. Brinkley Evans was dealing on the mound as he struck out eight batters. Evans was fooling hitters all night as he gave up just a single hit and allowed just two runners on base. He was able to get the complete game with the only run coming from a steal at home.
Evans played great offense as well. Of his three hits, two were doubles. Braedon Hutton was an RBI machine as he knocked in three runners.
Lewistown was the next stop for the Cardinals. They played the Redbirds on July 6 and were able to come up with a victory. Kovatch, Hutton and Bitney pitched in what was a solid display that produced a 9-5 win.
Crabtree was allergic to getting out and had a four-hit game with two RBIs. Matt Riehl had a three-run double to add some important runs for the Cardinals as well.
The Cardinals also took game two as they secured their fourth straight victory. The final score in game two was 8-4. Jette Pruttis did very well pitching and Tony Daley closed out the Redbirds. Daley hit in a pair of runners and Evans had a couple hits. The Cardinals scored five runs in the last two innings to emerge triumphant and sweep the Birds.
