Northern Division champs

The CHS girls win the Northern B Division championship Saturday in Wolf Point, winning four straight matches.

The Choteau High School volleyball team on Saturday defeated Glasgow, the top seed from District 2B, in straight sets to win the Northern B Division championship at the Wolf Point High School gym.

Choteau, Glasgow and third-place Shelby advance to the state volleyball tournament next week in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse on the Montana State University campus in Bozeman. The Choteau girls played Glasgow close in the first set, winning, 25-23, and then romped out to a decisive win, 25-8, in the second set, and kept rolling in the third set to win, 25-13. The Choteau girls put down 40 kills in the win, including 16 by junior middle-hitter Ellie Lee and 14 by senior outside hitter Nicole Krone.

On Friday, Choteau defeated District 1B foe Shelby, 3-1, in the semifinal match to advance to the championship match Saturday, where they played the Glasgow Scotties for the first time since the preseason tournament at Choteau.

The Scotties defeated Shelby in four sets on Saturday morning to advance to the championship.

In Friday's semifinal match, Choteau lost the first set, 22-25, and then came back with solid hitting, tough serving and great floor coverage to win the next three sets: 25-13, 25-14, 25-12. Shelby drops into the consolation play and will play Glasgow, the 3-1 winner of the nightcap with Fairfield on Saturday at 11 a.m. The winner of that match will play Choteau in the first championship match. Those are the only three teams left in the tournament as Malta, Harlem, Wolf Point, Great Falls Central Catholic and Fairfield were all eliminated in earlier matches on Friday.

On Thursday, Choteau, first seed from District 1B, opened the tournament with a straight-set win, 3-0, over Malta, the fourth seed from District 2B. The Choteau girls controlled the offense in every set and kept the M-Ettes in single digit scores all three sets. Choteau’s serving, a powerful weapon all year, was a big factor in the win. The Choteau girls tallied 20 aces with sophomore outside hitter Emma Gunderson coming up with five to lead the team. Choteau’s tough serving also scored points for Choteau when Malta’s girls made serve-receive errors. Middle hitter Ellie Lee led the team with seven of 25 kills while freshman libero Ada Bieler and Gunderson each fielded 10 out of the team’s 41 digs. Senior Nicole Krone and Abby McCollom, a junior, each had one block in the match.

With that win, the Lady Bulldogs played Fairfield, third seed out of the 1B, in the second round. Again, Choteau’s girls controlled the match, winning 25-20, 25-16, 25-12. The Choteau girls had great floor coverage in the match with 57 digs, 19 of which Bieler claimed. Choteau put down 29 kills against the Eagles with Lee tallying 10 of those.

Choteau’s and Fairfield’s team statistics were close in all areas except aces. The Choteau girls served 10 aces on Fairfield while Fairfield only aced the Bulldogs twice.
