Power school

Power Public School students will kick off the new school year with a meet and greet event Monday, Aug. 19.

Superintendent Loren Dunk said the district will serve hot dogs, chips and drinks at 6 p.m. The event gives the students an opportunity to come and see their classrooms, visit with the teachers and get ready for school to start on Wednesday, Aug. 21. Students are welcome to bring their schools supplies to their classrooms the night of the meet and greet.

Dunk is anticipating enrollment to be up by about 11 students. Pre-registration has the high school at 72, the junior high at 19 and elementary at 35. The district has 14 classified staff members and 18 certified.

The district has both an early kindergarten program, which runs three days a week, and a kindergarten program that goes five days. Both are full-day programs.

Two new teachers are joining the staff this year. Melissa Gilbert is the new K-12 music teacher. She has taught most recently in Lincoln. Earlier, she taught in Florida and Wyoming. She graduated college in Florida.

The school district is adding a new parent communications option through an “Infinite Campus Messenger.” Information regarding this option will be sent home with students on the first day of school.

The district has increased the price for the lunch program. School lunch will now cost $2.10 for kindergarten through sixth grade, $2.35 for grades seven through 12 and $3.75 for adults. Breakfast is $1.50 for kindergartners through seniors and $1.75 for adults. Activity tickets cost $30 for grades seven through 12 and $15 for kindergarten through sixth grade.

During the summer, new equipment was installed and flooring was laid in the wellness center. Dunk said some new concrete walks were poured and some of the lockers were repainted.
