The Choteau High School varsity girls basketball team ended the season in fourth place in the conference and will open against Conrad at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the District 1B tournament in Conrad Feb. 15-17.

The Rocky Boy girls finished in first place, followed by Fairfield in second, Shelby in third, Choteau in fourth, Conrad in fifth and Cut Bank in sixth.

The District 1B tournament starts on Thursday with Shelby versus Cut Bank at 6 p.m.

Play will resume on Friday at 1 p.m. when Fairfield will play the winner of the Shelby-Cut Bank game. At 2:30 p.m., Rocky Boy will play the winner of the Choteau-Conrad game. Loser-out action starts on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. and the district championship will be played at 6:30 p.m.

Choteau’s tournament team includes starters Katie Bieler, Christine Funk, Anna Jamison, Whitney Durocher and Nicole Krone plus substitutes Samara DeBruycker, Delani Daley, Tori Yeager and injured player Jessie Henderson, who will not be able to play. The team’s two alternates are Lila Bradley and Savannah Durocher.

The Choteau girls ended the regular season on a high note, winning their last two conference games at home, defeating Conrad, 44-36, and Cut Bank, 37-32. The Choteau girls finished the season 5-13 overall and 3-7 in conference.

Coach Bill Durocher said he expects a very competitive game against Conrad as both teams vie to extend their seasons. While Rocky Boy has been consistently on top this season, he said, the other five teams are fairly evenly matched and on any given night any of them can beat each other.

He expects the Choteau girls will have to limit turnovers, use their quickness on offense and play tough defense that will help keep them in the game. Also, he said, the girls are working hard not to have any let-down in the third quarter, something that has plagued them all season long.

Last weekend, Durocher said, the Choteau girls shot the ball better than they did in their earlier season losses to Conrad and Cut Bank, and played great on offense and defense during the fourth quarters.

Choteau was down, 35-29, at the start of the fourth quarter against Conrad and poured on 15 points while holding the Lady Cowgirls to just one point for the 36-44 win.

Going into the fourth quarter against Cut Bank, Choteau was down, 24-25, but went on a 13-7 run that gave them the 37-32 victory.

In the Conrad game, Durocher led her team in scoring with 18 points, include four three-point shots, and the girls made 50 percent of their free throws. Against Cut Bank, Funk and Durocher each scored 13 points in the win and the girls made 53 percent of their free throws.

Also last week, the Choteau varsity team traveled to Rocky Boy to make up a game postponed earlier due to weather. The Choteau girls lost that game, 58-36. Durocher led the girls with 15 points and the team made 50 percent of its free throws.
