The Choteau High School wrestling team will be on the road this week, traveling to Shelby on Dec. 22 for a match-up in the last competition before Christmas break.

Coaches Sam Armstrong and Levi Guenzler will take all seven wrestlers to the Shelby event, where team scores will not be kept. Shelby, Cut Bank, Conrad, Browning, Valier and Malta along with Choteau will compete in the round robin match-up. The boys will be slated into pools of four like weight classes. The winner of each pool will receive a T-shirt. “It’s a good send-off before Christmas break,” Armstrong said.

“We are still fighting colds and illnesses. That’s been bugging us the last two weeks. That’s definitely a dampener on our performance,” Armstrong said. He said he is looking forward to the holiday so his wrestlers can get some extra rest, get well and hit the ground running when the new year starts.

Last week, the Choteau team wrestled in Great Falls with six in the 40th annual CMR Holiday Wrestling Classic at CMR High School and one in the junior varsity tournament at Great Falls High School.

The Choteau varsity squad took 34th place out of a field of 54 Class AA, A, B and C schools, earning 30 team points. Pete Henderson, wrestling at 138 pounds, finished in eighth place and was the only Bulldog to place.

This year’s tournament had a 64-man bracket, and to place eighth was a high achievement. In Henderson’s weight class, there were multiple state placers. “He will be wrestler of the week for his performance,” Armstrong said. In the varsity tournament, he wrestled the most matches of anyone. On Friday, he wrestled four matches and then he wrestled three on Saturday.

Others competing in the varsity tournament were Watson Snyder at 145 pounds, Calvin Maples at 152 pounds, Bryan Ballard at 182 pounds, James Slaughter at 205 pounds and Dakota Daley at 285 pounds.

Ballard, Henderson and Slaughter all advanced to wrestle in the varsity tournament on Saturday. Maples and Daley wrestled on Saturday with Tommy Ehman at 182 pounds in the junior varsity tourney, where Daley took second place. While this is called a junior varsity tournament, Armstrong said, “It’s still stiff competition all the way through” because it includes all the varsity wrestlers eliminated from the Holiday Classic in Friday’s rounds.

Bozeman High School won the varsity tournament with 230.5 points, followed by Billings Senior High School in second with 192 points and Great Falls High School in third with 189.5 points.

Colstrip took fourth overall in the tournament and was first among Class B/C schools with 168.5 points. Glasgow with 96 points was second among B/C schools and Forsyth and Thompson Falls tied for third in B/C with 78 points.

Fairfield High School was 39th overall with 20 points.
