The Fairfield High School Lady Eagles came up with a big three-set win over Powell County High School in the opening round of the state volleyball tournament Thursday in the Brick Breeden Fieldhouse on the Montana State University campus in Bozeman.
Coach Courtney Bake’s Eagles, the second-seeded team from the Northern Division, defeated Powell County, 25-15, 25-18, 25-17, capitalizing on Powell County errors and raining down kills.
Fairfield will play again at 8 p.m. on Thursday against Huntley Project, the first-seeded team from the Southern Division. In other tournament action on Thursday, Roundup defeated Choteau, 3-0; Florence-Carlton defeated Joliet, 3-0; and Huntley Project defeated Wolf Point, 3-1.
Choteau will play Joliet in loser-out action at 10 a.m. Friday and Wolf Point and Powell County will play at noon.
The Fairfield girls had excellent floor coverage against the Wardens, rarely letting a kill attempt hit the floor. Emily Clotfelter and Alexis McWilliams set the ball well for hitters Chesney Rogers, Kenna Pitcher, Kyler Bake and Cheyenne Maddox. The Powell County girls struggled on serve receive throughout the match.
In one of the longest point runs in the match, Fairfield earned sideout on a double-hit call and took the lead, 13-12. Clotfelter rotated back to serve and reeled off 10 consecutive points as Fairfield scored on four blocks, three hitting errors, two serve-receive errors and a kill.
