Choteau High School will host the Choteau Classic wrestling tournament on Jan. 17 and 18 with a varsity tournament in the high school gym and a junior varsity round robin in the elementary school gym.

Wrestling will start on Friday at 1 p.m. with “pigtails” — matches to allow unranked wrestlers to get into the 16-man bracket for their weight classes. The varsity tournament will start at 2 p.m. and the junior varsity round robin at 2:30 p.m.

The school expects more than three dozen Class B and C teams to compete in this year’s varsity tournament. Additionally, Class AA Great Falls High and C.M. Russell High will send JV squads to compete in the round robin.

Last week, Choteau’s five wrestlers and coaches Sam Armstrong and Levi Guenzler were at home on Jan. 9 for the annual Choteau mixer with Fairfield, Valier and Simms. Choteau’s Hagen Kalista at 113 pounds, Daysha McLoughlin at 120 pounds, Kaide Kindler at 138 pounds, Liberty LaValley at 145 pounds and Jacob Major at 170 pounds all wrestled a couple of matches in the match-up, where no team scores were kept.

On Jan. 10 and 11, the team competed in the Cut Bank Booster invitational tournament, which had a two-day varsity tournament and a one-day junior varsity tourney. Choteau, with just five wrestlers, ended the tournament in 25th place with 19 points out of 29 teams competing.

Choteau freshman Kalista went 1-2 in the varsity tournament and scored four team points with his single win. Kindler, a junior, scored 15 points for the Bulldogs and took sixth place. Choteau’s other three wrestlers were all 0-2 in the varsity tournament.
