It took a little more than two hours and 13 rounds of spelling to decide the two top finishers in the 2018 Teton County Spelling Bee.
Choteau eighth-grader Bellamy Beadle correctly spelled “olio” and “yamen” in the sixth round to win the bee. Another eighth-grader, Amara Bodkins from Power, finished in second and will be the county alternate. The last two words she spelled correctly were “spherical” and “influenza.”
There were 52 spellers from Choteau, Dutton/Brady, Fairfield, Greenfield and Power who participated in the yearly spelling bee in the Fairfield school gymnasium. In the first round, 17 successfully spelled their word. That number quickly dwindled to five in the third round — Beadle, Bodkins along with Hailey Alzheimer and Nathan and Emma Gunderson, all from Choteau.
Teton County Superintendent of Schools Cathy Session said after the bee that the words were “a little more challenging” than some years. “This is the longest I can remember the county spelling bee going for at least a handful of years,” she added. Sessions congratulated each of the participants at the end of the bee and presented them with certificates and medals.
Beadle will represent Teton County at the state spelling bee on March 17 at Rocky Mountain College in Billings. The Teton County spelling bee is sponsored by the Choteau Soroptimist Club.
Dustin Gordon, Fairfield high school principal, was the pronouncer for the bee. Serving as judges were Fairfield Elementary Principal Courtney Bake, Fairfield teacher Diane Bremer and Fairfield staff member Brenda Evans.
