What usually is two days of fun in Dutton is being packed into one huge extravaganza. The town is planning its annual “Fun Day” celebration for Saturday, July 14. The proceeds from the event go to support the local swimming pool.
“We’re having a corn-hole tournament this year, which has never been done before,” said Sarah Feldmann, manager of the pool and a member of the Fun Day planning committee. “There will be two divisions: one for adults and one for kids ages nine and up. The prize money for the adult competition is expected to be really good, about $250-300.”
Sisters and long-time Dutton residents Betty Burtness and Marcile Trebesch will serve as the grand marshals of the parade.
“It took my breath away [to be named grand marshal.] I didn’t expect it,” said Trebesch.
Their parents, Ben and Lillie Odden, were original homesteaders in Dutton. Betty and her husband, Lloyd, live in the same house she grew up in.
“I’ve lived in Dutton my whole life, except for when I went to college and worked for a short time at a bank in Great Falls. Then I came back and worked at the Dutton bank for 39 years,” said Burtness. “Because of my work at the bank, it seemed like I was the treasurer for almost every club in town. I was the treasurer for the American Legion and the Dutton Fun Day for many years.”
Like her sister, Trebesch has lived most of her life in Dutton, and has been very active in community service. In the past, she’s done volunteer home care, work at the senior center and fund raising for various charities.
“We’re all proud of our town,” she said. “We’d like to keep it going if we can.”
