School board considering cuts, 4-day school week - Choteau Acantha: News

School board considering cuts, 4-day school week

Posted: Wednesday, March 19, 2014 3:00 pm

The Choteau School Board, meeting March 11, heard grim budget news from Superintendent Jim Baldwin and scheduled a special meeting, March 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium to hear more in-depth options for coping with a projected $164,268 deficit for the coming school year.

Because of declining enrollment here, Baldwin told the board that administrators expected bad news from the Office of Public Instruction, which calculates the schools’ maximum allowable budgets, based on a number of factors including enrollment. With 35 seniors set to graduate in May and only 15 freshmen coming in next fall, Choteau’s enrollment is falling, he said, and even though OPI allows schools to use three-year enrollment averages, the figures are all still down.
